"Space and Time" by 311

My costume design class was assigned to each pick a song to use as the basis of a costume design in our sketchbooks as a way to practice drawing clothes and figures. I ended up choosing a random song from one of my Spotify playlists. "Space and Time," like a lot of 311's music, fuses rock, ska, reggae, and rap into a beachy tune with an upbeat tempo and easygoing lyrics. All this screams beach to me, so I decided to go for a woman in beachwear. I imagine the physical embodiment of this song to be a Mexican woman with a music festival-style fashion sense. When I think of the beach, one of my first thoughts is Mexico since where I'm from the ultimate beach vacation is usually to Mexico. The music festival elements come in from the idea of live music outdoors. I chose to focus on the title and sound of the song over the lyrics, which is where the space elements come in. I added elements of neons and transparent clothing to give a bit of futurism to the design. I decided to really drive it home with a bunch of little space themed tattoos.
